How Often Should I Have My Consumer Unit Checked?

An electrical installation in a home should be checked out by an electrician every three - 5 years.

If you own your property, it is recommended that your Consumer Unit is checked every 10 years. In rented properties, checks are advised every 5 years or at the point of change of tenancy. This is to ensure that wiring and surge protection are working as they should, as well as making sure that the unit is up to date with the most recent wiring regulations.

Keep in mind, the RCD inside your unit should be tested every 6 months or so. This is the most reliable indicator of more complex issues early on.
